      Tasting Notes and Description
Château de la Négly is located in the Occitanie region in France, in the La Clape massif overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Its exceptional geographical location creates a unique alchemy of elements: caressed by the sea spray and buffeted by the Tramontane and sea winds, this sun-drenched land absorbs heat to warm the grapes that soak up the sun’s golden rays. The grapes greedily accept the treasures that Nature offers them. They can then begin their slow maturation, generously returning the bounty they have received.

Very low yields, rigorous selection and unassailable quality control sees Jean Paux-Rosset and his oenologist Claude Gros setting new standards for the entire Languedoc not just their La Clape area. The Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape LAncely is predominantly Mourvedre with a little Syrah. Its nose of ripe black fruit is followed by a creamy palate of cassis black cherry and plum with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. It is deliciously smooth and sweet with everything in harmony and an aftertaste that is long and complex.

"The final blend of the 2016 La Clape L'Ancely is about 85% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It's perfumed and floral on the nose, with additional notes of ripe raspberries and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, ripe and supple, it's not as dense as the la Porte du Ciel, with redder fruit and a more forward personality. Hints of cocoa show up on the long, silky finish.

This year's visit to Chateau de la Negly included a surprise look at some previous vintages, which cemented in my mind that these are some of the most compelling wines to come out of Languedoc. No, they're not wines for those who think size and richness are incompatible with elegance, as these inky behemoths actually—to this taster anyway—show a surprising level of nuance and finesse. They're big—mostly 15% alcohol or higher—but avoid tasting stewed or raisined. The ripe tannins allow them to drink well young, while the concentration enables them to drink well for up to two decades. Yes, the top cuvées are expensive, but put them in the context of other world-class wines, produced in quantities of only about 300 cases annually, and all of a sudden they don't seem so pricey. "
