Vieux Château Certan

Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known crus of Pomerol. Its foundation dates back to the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family settled there from Scotland.

Later, it is mentioned in 1785 on the map of Belleyme under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place called Certan takes its name from the estate.

In 1858, Charles de Bousquet purchased the Vieux Château Certan. They owe the current appearance of the buildings to him.

In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a wine merchant in the Flemish Ardennes, bought the property. This was the starting point of the family establishment in the Bordeaux region.

The Vineyard

Covering an area of 14 hectares in one piece, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard is divided into 23 plots managed independently according to the types of soil, the grape varieties planted and the age of the vines.

With a wide variety of nuances, the soils are made up of a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a clayey-gravelly part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%).

In relation to the surface area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, associated with the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the various grape varieties to reach optimal maturation.
