Domaine de Montille

We are delighted to welcome new arrivals from Domaine de Montille.

The Montille name has long been revered in Burgundy, although the reputation of the Domaine was properly established in 1947 by then prominent lawyer, Hubert de Montille. After inheriting a few precious hectares in Volnay, and later adding further parcels in Volnay, Pommard and Puligny, Hubert’s style quickly gained recognition for its litheness and capacity to mature.

The Domaine is now run by his son Etienne and daughter Alix, the 9th generation of their family to do so. Etienne converted the estate to organics in 1995 and to biodynamics in 2005, and also introduced the use of whole bunches for the reds bringing about greater aromatic complexity to the wines. In 2003 the duo expanded the operations with a négoce business, Maison Deux Montille, and in 2012 they purchased Château de Puligny-Montrachet where Etienne had previously managed, absorbing it into Domaine de Montille in 2017. This amalgamated portfolio is now regarded as one of the finest in the Côte d’Or.

Working now with American winemaker Brian Sieve as Chef de Cave, the Domaine counts roughly 35 hectares of vines of which 75% are Premiers or Grands Crus from both Côtes, amongst its portfolio. We are thrilled to offer a selection of these fine expressions of 2020 vintage Burgundy for duty-paid purchase today.

Orders are secured on first come first served basis, and we will as always distribute as fairly as possible. Delivery is available immediately.

The 2020 Vintage

The driest growing season since 1945 has led to significant concentration of fruit character. Rainfall was around 50% down on normal from April to August with 20% more sunshine than in a usual year.

Average temperature was up 1.5°c compared to the norm. Crucially, cool nights prevailed which protected the grapes from excessive ripeness and ensured sufficient acidity levels. Constant and even phenolic ripeness led to an early harvest that was mostly completed before August was out.

Excellent weather conditions during the harvest. Yields clearly below forecasts, especially for the Pinot Noir, although small, did deliver fruit in perfect health. An excellent Chardonnay vintage, with yields closer to average and quality superb.

Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Aux Malconsorts' 2020

Domaine de Montille has the privilege of working with two parcels of "Les Malconsorts", this one covering 0.89 hectare with the soils in the higher part (light brown clay with pebbles) being different yet very complimentary to those at the bottom (deep red clay).

"The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is two-thirds whole cluster. It has a well-defined, quite tertiary bouquet, the whole bunch quite expressive at the moment, imparting light black pepper and clove aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Good density here, grippy and quite concentrated towards the finish. Just a touch of black pepper emerges on the aftertaste. Serious and very complex. Closure: Diam. Drink: 2026-2050."

Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru 'En Champans' 2020

"En Champans" is one of the most highly regarded vineyards of Volnay. This steeply sloped terroir is very calcareous with a light brown soil and sits at the highest end of the parcel. Toward the bottom, the terroir is more clay-driven with earth that vascilates between brown and red. This is a major Volnay cru. The Domaine de Montille vines line up across the slope and benefit from optimal sunshine exposure.

"Champans" comes from the combination of two words, "champ" or "field" and "pans", which means "slope".

A Volnay Premier Cru "En Champans" is a spawning wine that delivers vibrant red fruits (cherries) and a structure of dense tannins that somehow resist rigidity. The palate is ample, structured and thoroughly elegant. This wine tends to open up after seven to 12 years.

Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Sizies' 2020

The Beaune Premier Cru "Les Sizies" is an introduction to our Premier Crus. With our Bourgogne Rouge, it allows the discovery of the de Montille style and the cachet of the Domaine, which favors purity and elegance.

"Sizies" comes from the name of the property's owner in the 18th century, Renaud de Sessie, who owned large tanneries in Beaune. This vineyard of 1.62 hectares, planted on clay-driven soils at the foot of the slope, offers us a wine of generous pleasure with lots of fruit that can deliver its full potential even in its youth. It drinks well without too much of a wait, but it can nonethless surprise with its aging capacity of approximately 15 years.

"A fine Beaune premier cru. Focus and elegance are the key elements here. Dark fruit, cool notes and a lifted, leafy, precise feel on the palate. Fine tannins and bright acidity suggest this will age very nicely. Drink 2023 - 2028."

Domaine de Montille Meursault 'Saint Christophe' 2020

The Meursault "Saint-Christophe" Domaine de Montille, blends three climats "Les Casse-Têtes", "Les Petits Charrons" and "Les Narvaux du Dessous", three terroirs each recognized for their exceptional quality and remarkably located in the middle of the hillside of Meursault also called "Montagne Saint-Christophe".

The result is a balanced wine, with a beautiful complementarity, the generous character of the "Petits Charrons", the minerality of "Casse-Tetes" and the complexity and elegance of "Narvaux du Dessous".

"Precise and elegant citrus nose, followed by chalky minerality on the palate. Drink 2025 - 2030."

Domaine de Montille Bourgogne 'Clos du Château de Puligny-Montrachet' 2020

"Le Clos du Château" is essentially a vineyard of approximately five hectares that sits in front of the Château de Puligny and is entirely enclosed by walls. This facilitates the biodynamic farming methods.

Classified as Bourgogne AOC, this vineyard is remarkably well situated in the village on the border of the Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. The deep soil, consisting of silt and clay gives the wine a lovely generosity.

"Bright and fresh, but with some texture too. Greater, above-average Bourgogne Blanc. Drink 2022 - 2027."

Domaine de Montille 'Puligny-Montrachet du Château de Puligny-Montrachet' 2020

This Puligny-Montrachet is rather unique because three-quarters of the bottling comes from a 1.1 hectares parcel situated in the Puligny Premier Cru "Les Chalumeaux" that was declassified by INAO when it was replanted in 1975 because the former owner brought in 20 centimeters of topsoil from elsewhere. This is prohibited by INAO's regulations. Since then, the combination of erosion and biodynamic farming have made the vines' roots dive deeper to the original terroir. This gives this Puligny-Montrachet a density and an unusual complexity for a village wine that places it somewhere between a very good village wine and a Premier Cru.

This is the only Puligny-Montrachet village vineyard to sit mid-slope, amidst the Premier Crus. The two other parcels that complete this wine are located in "Levron" and "Baudrières-Nosroy" and compose another 0.38 hectares.

The wine is fresh, expressing citrus flavors, with a pleasant aroma of white flowers. The mouth is long, fluid, with a saline and very pleasant, stony finish.

Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Rouge 2020

This regional red Burgundy, composed of a total of 3.28 hectares, comes from one Volnay vineyard in the lieu-dit "Les Longbois" and various vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet.

The regional red Burgundy benefits from the same biodynamic viticultre and the same attention as our other, more illustrious Premier and Grand Crus. It's an introduction both to Burgundy and to the Domaine. This wine is ready to drink even in its absolute youth and reflects the quality and cachet of the Domaine in its purity, authenticity and elegance.

"Mid ruby; crunchy, sour-cherry fruit. Really quite fine and elegant. Drink 2025 - 2030."

Domaine de Montille Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Porusots' 2020

"Porusot" is the diminuitive of porroux, which can be found in the lieu-dit "Les Porroux", a regional indication of "places with rocky soils". This is further derived from the Latin plural of petrosa, or "rocky places". Indeed, the terrain of "Porusots" in Meursault is covered with large-sized rocks.

"Tank sample. Spicy number! Ripe and flavoursome with lots of spice over the citrus and apple. Texture too. Drink 2025 - 2035."

Domaine de Montille Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Folatières' 2020

"Folatières" comes from the old French "Foletière", a place haunted by goblins, legendary creatures, leprechauns with liveliness and grace. It typically conjures up a vision of dancing wisps. The vineyard is large and hardly homogenous. A single parcel of 0.52 hectare located in the heart of the cru, at mid-slope and with two prestigious neighbors on each side (Domaines Leflaive and Leroy.)

It is a remarkable cru – fine, airy, playful yet complex, floral and spicy. Its mouthfeel is generous but structured and lengthy, which indicates a long aging potential.

"Cask sample. Slight reduction on the nose; fresh citrus and apple, a leesy richness balancing these. Admirable weight. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Maison Deux Montille Soeur et Frère Pouilly-Fuissé 'En Vergisson' 2020

Alix de Montille only selects parcels that align with her demands: controlled yields from carefully pruned and plowed vines. Nothing is purchased unless the parcel is sustainably farmed. Some vineyards are even in the process of being converted to organic viticulture. Alix works with fruit from approximately five hectares spread between the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and Chablis. Almost 35,000 bottles are tagged "Deux Montille Soeur-Frères" every vintage.

"Half is in 600 litre barrel and half in stainless steel. Ripe fruit with quality reduction. Just short of peaches, yet still with the southern opulence. Balanced, just the right degree of light acidity. Made with a light touch."

Maison Deux Montille Soeur et Frère Chablis 1er Cru 'Les Fourchaumes' 2020

Approximately five to twenty percent new casks primarily made from Allier wood that sees a long yet light toasting. The first racking occurs after about one year of wood aging, after which begins the second, four- to six-month phase in stainless steel, which preserves the wine's freshness and tension. We finish the aging with a light fining followed by a similarly light and respectful filtration before bottling.

"Half is in 600 litre barrel and half in stainless steel. Clear, focussed, precise and Chablisien, this has got the tension that we need from Chablis. Clear fresh apple and oyster-shell flavours all the way through. Tasted: October 2021."

Maison Deux Montille Soeur et Frère Saint Romain 2020

Hidden in the hills of the Côte de Beaune, Saint-Romain is encircled by cliffs. The vines, which face due south or north-northeast, are at distinctly high elevations. Within this assembly of marl and limestone, the bands of clay are well-suited to chardonnay (57 hectares), but pinot noir is no exception with around 40 hectares.

This Saint-Romain comes from 20% of the lieu dit "Sous Roches" and 80% from "Jarrons" at the bottom of the village. The vines, which are about 30 years old, are planted on very rocky soil and offer wines with beautiful balance. They age 12 to 14 months before bottling and never see new barrels.

Among the vines of this plateau, 2 hectares were planted in 1958 and, being remarkably well-exposed, they produce naturally grapes with a complex and intense aromatic expression.

From the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, this is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Sauvignon Gris.

"It opens with very pretty notes of bright confit lemon, just a hint of fresh leafy green herbs and a certain elegance to the aromas. It is surprising rich and luscious on the palate, perhaps the Sauvignon Gris adding a little texture and flavour, and after flirting with peachiness the palate tightens up again into fresh-sliced apple and citrus on the finish. Lots of mouthfeel here giving broad appeal."

Château Monconseil Gazin 2019

The Château itself wasn't built until around 1500, and it was bought by the Baudet family in 1894. Since then, five generations of the family have put their heart and soul into tending the 18 hectares of vines at this château in the Cotes de Blaye, a region which borders Bourg at the northernmost part of Bordeaux's right bank.

The Vineyards are situated on one of the best sites on the limestone escarpment of the Blaye - the hill above the village of Plassac. Clay/limestone soils give excellent drainage to vines and allow them to fully develop.
