Domaine de Montille
We are delighted to welcome new arrivals from Domaine de Montille.
The Montille name has long been revered in Burgundy, although the reputation of the Domaine was properly established in 1947 by then prominent lawyer, Hubert de Montille. After inheriting a few precious hectares in Volnay, and later adding further parcels in Volnay, Pommard and Puligny, Hubert’s style quickly gained recognition for its litheness and capacity to mature.

The Domaine is now run by his son Etienne and daughter Alix, the 9th generation of their family to do so. Etienne converted the estate to organics in 1995 and to biodynamics in 2005, and also introduced the use of whole bunches for the reds bringing about greater aromatic complexity to the wines. In 2003 the duo expanded the operations with a négoce business, Maison Deux Montille, and in 2012 they purchased Château de Puligny-Montrachet where Etienne had previously managed, absorbing it into Domaine de Montille in 2017. This amalgamated portfolio is now regarded as one of the finest in the Côte d’Or.
Working now with American winemaker Brian Sieve as Chef de Cave, the Domaine counts roughly 35 hectares of vines of which 75% are Premiers or Grands Crus from both Côtes, amongst its portfolio. We are thrilled to offer a selection of these fine expressions of 2020 vintage Burgundy for duty-paid purchase today.
Orders are secured on first come first served basis, and we will as always distribute as fairly as possible. Delivery is available immediately.
The 2020 Vintage
The driest growing season since 1945 has led to significant concentration of fruit character. Rainfall was around 50% down on normal from April to August with 20% more sunshine than in a usual year.
Average temperature was up 1.5°c compared to the norm. Crucially, cool nights prevailed which protected the grapes from excessive ripeness and ensured sufficient acidity levels. Constant and even phenolic ripeness led to an early harvest that was mostly completed before August was out.
Excellent weather conditions during the harvest. Yields clearly below forecasts, especially for the Pinot Noir, although small, did deliver fruit in perfect health. An excellent Chardonnay vintage, with yields closer to average and quality superb.
