Domaine du Grapillon d’Or

The origin of the CHAUVET family dates back to around 1630 and the first winegrowers of the Chauvet family appear in the registers in 1703. Created in 1774 then enlarged and modified in 1806 to create a stable for 4 horses, the property has remained, until today, in the hands of the Chauvet family.

Over the years and successive generations, many developments have been made, both in the vineyard and in the estate.

Indeed, Celine’s grandfather was a pioneer by planting in 1966 one of the first two plots of Syrah present in Gigondas and her father, Bernard, continued by constantly maintaining and renovating the vineyard in which plots of Grenache from 1919 and 1929 are still in production and religiously maintained.

Celine discovered and learnt the winemaking profession from her grandfather and father.

When she decided to join them at the estate, marketing was already developed with a single bottle of Gigondas, Celine continued the work in order to develop sales and today they have six different vintages to offer for tasting.

More recently, with the help of two talented architects from Gigondas, they launched, in 2013, the creation of a new tasting space that is more functional, more modern and more welcoming.

The Vineyard

The terroirs of Gigondas form a unique geological ensemble. The vineyard is embedded in the setting of the Dentelles de Montmirail, born from the sea 200 million years ago.

The Dentelles are the combination of sedimentation (deposit of limestone and marl from the Jurassic and Cretaceous, sand and sandstone from the Tertiary era) and tectonic mixing. The Dentelles massif emerged with the thrust of the Pyrenees and the Alps.

The vineyard is marked by the diversity of the terroirs, it is mainly composed of the Cone of the Font des Papes, sandy and clayey soils as well as limestone and pebble fragments.

The variety of these terroirs gives an exceptional complexity to the wines.

“We limit and minimize the use of phytosanitary products but we do not prohibit their use when circumstances require it.”

With Provençal influence, its climate of contrasts is subject to the heat of summer and the violence of the Mistral. Hot and dry, it benefits from nearly 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. The Dentelles induce very diverse exposures and are the main vector of a most interesting microclimate, the Dentelles cause rising and falling breezes, which moderate the temperature peaks.

“For the majority of the vineyard, the West/North-West exposure provides perfect ventilation, avoids the excessive heat of summer and gives the wines a finesse and acidity that make them excellent wines for keeping.”
