Domaine Girard

A family estate since 1928, it has evolved with each generation contributing to it. Jean Girard originally set the winery up in his native village of Alaigne, constructing the cellar and conducting its first plantings. The property was taken over by his son Eugène Girard in the 1940s, the estate mainly concentrated on the 7 hectares of old grape varieties that were cultivated on the Malepère terroir (Carignan, Aramon, Jurançon, Cinsault)

In 1980s everything changed. André took over the reins of the estate with his wife Marie-Hélène. At the time there was a growing desire of the winegrowers to readapt the grape varieties to the terroir. The vineyard and cellar were expanded to accommodate the harvests of around 10 additional hectares. The old grape varieties gave way to varieties more suited to the climate and he clay soils of the terroir, focusing on Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Malbec.

In 2000 Philippe created the very first vintages of Domaine Girard. In order to work the 30 hectares cultivated today, a new winery was completed in 2017. Heir to an exceptional terroir, renowned for the typicality of its wines, Philippe perfects his knowledge to highlight the best of the AOP Malepère.

The Terroir

Malepère, malo peiro… “Bad stone” in Occitan.

In the Middle Ages, the sandstone of Malepère (then the only material available for construction) struggled to withstand the ravages of weather and time, but this fragility would later become a real asset for the winemaker. Indeed, it was without too much difficulty that the deep roots of the vines could penetrate this crumbly support, a poor builder, certainly, but an essential progenitor of great, harmonious and distinguished wines.

Its location, enhanced by the backdrop of the Pyrenees Mountains, allows oceanic influences to compete with the dominant Mediterranean climate that is omnipresent everywhere else in Languedoc. The northern grape varieties grown there benefit from both the clay-limestone soil and a particularly favourable climate thanks to the altitude, which helps temper the summer heat.

As a result, due to the combination of the “bad stone” combined with the character of the wines and the climate helped being between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that the winegrowers were able to develop the delicious singularity of Malepère. Languedoc with Atlantic tones.
