Château du Hureau

In 1798 Gabriel Vatan married Renée Fauveau, a winegrowers daughter. The pair settled in Dampierre and their descendants have remained in the region ever since, near the vines and the Tuffeau caves.

The current owner, Philippe Vatan, along with his father Geroge and his brother Pascal, took over the estate in 1987. Their first vinification was going perfectly when they unfortunately lost Pascal in a tragic road accident. They knew they had to carry on and produced two fabulous vintages in 1989 and 1990. They have since gone on to win many awards and accreditations for their wines.

In a gradual evolution they were organically faming across the vineyards by 2009, the process allowed them to rediscover their ancestors know how.

Today Philippe is joined by his eldest daughter Agathe who helps him run the estate.

In the Vineyard

Located on the south bank of the Loire, the domaine spreads over the best vineyard plots.

The Château du Hureau vineyard spreads over about twenty plots covering around 20 hectares, over the villages of Dampierre sur Loire, Souzay-Champigny and Saumur.

18.5 hectares are planted with Cabernet Franc, all of them within the appellation of Saumur-Champigny.

The Saumur Blanc and Coteaux de Saumur come from 4 little plots of Chenin, representing 1.5 hectares.

The whole vineyard is planted on the tuffeau, a sedimentary limestone from the cretaceous era, with which all the Loire castles and houses were built. The tuffeau is also renowned to be an ideal base for vineyards soils: it heats up easily after the winter and regulates beautifully the water supply during summer.

The tuffeau drains well, and during the summer droughts, the vine roots can still find enough humidity to help the grapes ripen well.

Differences in the soil texture, in the depth of the tuffeau, in the exposition, in the distance from the Loire, in the altitude, plus the plant’s origin and, of course, the age of the vines, all these things give a different potential to each plot.

It’s because they love the tuffeau that the Chenin and the Cabernet Franc became the favourite grape varieties throughout the Saumur and Touraine.

In the winery

The Vatan ancestors extracted tuffeau from the local caves, they would sell the stone and use the cave for shelter. For themselves, their cattle, the harvest and their wines.

These caves turned out to be perfect for vinification and ageing of the local “crus”: high hygrometric level, constant and cool temperature. When Philippe took over the estate in 1987, the question was whether to build a modern winery outside or to install a new range of tanks inside the cave.

After a long brainstorming session with his father and brother, the decision to stay in the cave was taken. They never looked back.

No one can scientifically explain everything in the winemaking process: there are so many parameters, but Philippe is certain that he wouldn’t make exactly the same wines in a “chai”. Maybe it’s due to the fungus covered walls, witnesses’ of 1000 vintages.
